Does Google buy Nest Labs for its patents?


Google buys Nest Labs, a company with 200 employees that makes the “Internet of Things” smart thermostats and smoke detectors. Google will pay $3.2 billion for this technology company, based in Palo Alto, California.


Founded in 2010, Nest Labs owns no less than 33 patent families (patents and patent applications) filed in the US, 4 patent families have already been converted to WO (as PCT patent applications) and 1 patent family to Europe. However, Nest Labs has already been sued for patent infringement by Honeywell, Allure Energy and BRK Brands Inc.
